Beginnings and Underthings

"Ugh!" (Throws himself across his bed in full drama flair) "Mommy, you're ruining my life!"

I know I can't be the only parent out there who hears this.

In my world, I hear it often. Mainly, it comes from my wonderful 7 year old. At times, even though they don't say it in so many words, I'm sure my other kids are saying it too. The stomping of feet, the screeching temper tantrums ~ I think given translation, they'd say the same. Thankfully, the times I hear it are usually over the most inconsequential details of day to day parenting.

Today, I ruined my child's life by : insisting he wear clean underwear and socks. EVERY DAY.

I know. Report me. I'm horrible. This is one of those issues that I'm sure is not specific to boys - but in our house seems to be. The concept of hygiene on the whole can be a struggle with any kid. Add in that independent streak and well....either you're nagging til you're blue in the face - or dealing with undies better left to the HAZMAT crew.

I feel like I need to apologize to his future partner already.

I'd like to think (hope) that I'm raising kids who will someday be functional adults. However, on the days when I have to convince with my 7 year old that yes, you do need to change your skivvies daily; then come up with a better explanation than "because that's what people do!" Well. I worry that maybe I'm screwing up here somewhere.

I can almost, understand kids fighting about brushing teeth....washing hands.....and all that stuff that is an extra step that takes time away from play. But - if you're already stripping down to change clothes, what's the big deal about changing 3 extra garments?

Maybe I should be thankful he wants to contribute less to our daily laundry never ending mountain pile?
